According to Nomisma's FMCG Packaging Observatory, 45% of purchases are decided on the basis of the absence of excess packaging and the recyclability of materials.
In this scenario,' comments Emanuele Di Faustino, Head of Industry, Retail & Services at Nomisma, 'the agri-food chain does not escape the debate on the responsibilities of the current climate crisis, so much so as to be considered one of the sectors most involved in climate change. The tipping point is, therefore, the assessment of the real contribution that the food system and the packaging industry can make to achieving the climate neutrality and environmental, social and economic sustainability objectives set by the European Green Deal and the UN 2030 Agenda, but also to addressing the urgent and unpostponable challenges to be in line with the ESG principles.
The analysis produced by Nomisma clearly shows the attention of consumers towards the sustainability of food and beverages and the central role played by packaging: 1 Italian out of 2 believes that the presence of packaging with sustainable connotations gives the product a green footprint.
There is also a strong focus on plastic-free and multi-use packaging. As further confirmation, 7 out of 10 consumers consider sustainable packaging to be important in their food purchasing decisions.
Further research by Nomisma reveals that 57% of Italians plan to reduce their purchase of products with virgin plastic packaging in the coming year. Furthermore, a survey by Packaging World found that 71% of respondents consider a product sustainable if its packaging is recyclable, and 69% if its pack is made of recycled material.
More than a third of Italians, 34%, indicate environmental sustainability as one of the main drivers for choosing a food product and 28% also choose based on the sustainability of the packaging. These figures underline the growing importance of sustainable packaging in consumers' purchasing decisions.
A notable example of sustainable packaging is that proposed by us at L-ife, we have developed compostable packaging made of mycelium. This packaging is not only fully compostable, but is also made using waste fibres. In addition, the mycelium packaging can be used as a soil nutrient, thus contributing to a sustainable product lifecycle
